With a heavy platter, the use of a bearing ball that is as hard as possible considerably improves the running characteristics of the platter bearing. Use of a bearing ball made of ceramic reduces friction and enhances durability.
Bearing balls made of steel often get flattened by the high point load in the contact area with the platter spindle (this is easily discernible under high magnification). The contact area thus gets bigger, resulting in increased friction. Because of the high point load, the bearing oils get pushed out and the contact area runs dry, resulting in significantly higher abrasion and the decline of running properties due to increased friction. Ceramic or mineral bearing balls have a significantly higher load capacity and excellent running properties.
